SDA Data Processing Unit (DPU)

SDA Data Processing Unit (DPU)The Data Processing Unit (DPU) is a key component of the Optical Communications Terminal (OCT), responsible for high-speed data processing, channel coding, and communication interface management. Designed with reference to the Space Development Agency (SDA) Optical Communications Terminal Standard, the DPU architecture incorporates Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) Forward Error Correction (FEC) to improve data transmission reliability over optical inter-satellite links.

Key functions include data framing, LDPC encoding and decoding, data synchronization, and high-speed data interfacing. These capabilities support reliable optical communication and interoperability between terminals within SDA-based space communication architectures.

LDPC Forward Error Correction (FEC)

Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) coding is a powerful Forward Error Correction (FEC) technique used to improve data transmission reliability in optical communication systems. By introducing redundant parity bits during encoding, LDPC enables the receiver to detect and correct transmission errors without requiring retransmission.

LDPC decoding employs iterative algorithms to recover transmitted data from noisy signals, providing strong error-correction performance with coding gains approaching the Shannon limit. In SDA-oriented optical communication systems, LDPC coding helps improve receiver sensitivity, reduce bit error rates (BER), and enhance communication reliability over long-distance inter-satellite links.

SDA DPU Functional Architecture

The DPU integrates Ethernet data interfacing, FSO frame processing, forward error correction (FEC), and modem functions to support optical communication links.

The transmit path performs data framing, CRC generation, LDPC or convolutional encoding, scrambling, and preamble insertion. The receive path performs the corresponding synchronization, decoding, error checking, and frame recovery operations.
