Your Spacecraft Always Knows Exactly Where It’s Pointing

Every optical link, every docking maneuver, every Earth observation begins with one question: which way am I facing? GPS can tell you where you are, but it can’t tell you your orientation. That’s the job of an inertial measurement unit — and NantNova’s Aegiverse line does it with fiber optic gyroscopes that deliver navigation-grade accuracy at a fraction of the usual cost.

Inside each unit, laser light races through a coil of optical fiber in both directions simultaneously. When the spacecraft rotates, one beam travels slightly farther than the other — and that tiny difference reveals the exact rate of rotation. No moving parts, no mechanical wear, and nothing to drift over time. The result is a sensor that stays accurate for years in the harshest environments space can throw at it.

Light Instead of Spinning Metal

Traditional gyroscopes rely on rapidly spinning masses to sense rotation — parts that wear out, consume power, and add weight. NantNova’s Aegiverse IMUs replace all of that with a coil of optical fiber and a beam of laser light. The principle is called the Sagnac effect: two beams circling the same loop in opposite directions will arrive at slightly different times if the loop is rotating. Measure that difference, and you know your rotation rate to extraordinary precision.

The product line spans four models. The single-axis SG-3A gives tactical-grade accuracy in a palm-sized package. The three-axis TG-3P reaches navigation grade for missions that demand the very best. The AR-2A blends fiber optic and MEMS sensing for a compact attitude and heading reference, and the GS-1X pairs a MEMS gyroscope with GNSS to deliver full position-and-orientation in a module lighter than a smartphone.
